The Mississippi River, which empties into the Gulf of Mexico, serves not only as fuel for these great fisheries, but also as a safe passage for fisherman to get to deep productive offshore waters. Ten miles out of the mouth of the Mississippi River the bottom plummets to over 1000 feet. The loop currents from the Gulf Stream push in even closer than that during certain times of the year. Blue Marlin over 1000 lbs. and many Yellowfin Tuna over 200 lbs. have been caught within 12 miles of the mouth of the Mississippi River. In addition, we have numerous oil rigs throughout the waters off Venice, providing an excellent environment for year round fishing. |
